The FDA Is Dragging Their Feet By Failing To Ban Toxic Baby Food

Federal low-income nutrition programs give baby food manufacturers a built-in market and bypass consumer scrutiny

Tuesday, January 25, 2022 - There are several important reasons why the US Congress decided to get involved and get to the bottom of the heavy metals in baby food allegations. One of them is that several brands of baby foods are included in most states' Special Supplemental Nutrition Program for Women, Infants and Children (WIC)... a taxpayer-funded, low-income food supplement program, making it a Federal issue to violate FDA baby food health regulations and standards. With no laws on the books, just loosely-enforced FDA guidelines, baby food manufacturers are free to stretch the FDA's acceptable boundaries that only require companies to make sure that the raw ingredients that go into their baby food products are within a generally-acceptable limit for naturally-occurring heavy metals like cadmium, lead, and arsenic.

Congress must take immediate action to fix the heavy metals in baby food catastrophe. Exposure to heavy metals could affect an entire future generation of adults and limit their mental capacity. There is no more urgent problem in America than to see to it that the food we feed our children is safe and pure. Exposure to these toxic heavy metals "affects babies' brain development and nervous system, it affects their behavior, permanently decreases their IQ," according to Tom Neltner, chemicals policy director for the Environmental Defense Fund in the Washington Post. Baby food heavy metal lawsuits may be the only way that the companies get the messages that they must remove their baby food from the market.

Baby food manufacturers appear unwilling to aggressively test their finished baby food products for heavy metals. Congress has said they will take action but even they have done little. Mothers of children that have been injured by toxic heavy metals in baby foods are outraged that years have passed since baby food companies could have been expected to take action, and nothing has been done. A mother of a sick child has taken the initiative and told Spotlight On America about the "alarming levels of lead, arsenic, cadmium, and mercury in baby food, exposed this year after a pair of Congressional reports pulled back the curtain the industry's top brands for "knowingly keeping toxic products on the market" and "consistently cutting corners and putting profit over the health of babies and children." There is very little objective information available to mothers who are concerned about the safety of their children's baby food except that most simply assume that the baby food products would not be on the market if the FDA felt they were unsafe. But this is not the case.

Earlier in the year a US Congressional Subcomittee reported that certain baby foods manufacturers like Gerber, Beech-Nut, HappyBABY (made by Nurture), Earth's Best Organic baby foods (made by Hain Celestial Group) Campbell Soup, which sells Plum Organics baby foods, Walmart (its private brand is Parent's Choice) and Sprout Foods failed tests for the presence of high amounts of toxic heavy metals. Several companies, Campbell Soup, Walmart, and Sprout Foods, did not comply with Congressional Subcommittee's request for information. The head of the Congrfessional investigation chastised the Food and Drug Administration for failing to see the urgency of the matter. Subcommittee Chair Raja Krishnamoorthi (D-Ill.) told The Washington Post. "The FDA must set standards and regulate this industry much more closely, starting now. It's shocking that parents are basically being completely left in the lurch by their government."
