Local Organic Produce Growers Are Not Required To Test Their Fruits and Vegetables For Toxic Heavy Metals
Homemade baby food made with organic non-gmo ingredients may be just as contaminated with heavy metals as store-bought
Wednesday, December 15, 2021 - The free market is what it is and usually comes up with a way to correct itself when the pendulum swings too far in one direction. An example of going astray is the reliance on individual baby food companies to self-regulate and test their products for the presence of toxic heavy metals. It seems as if the baby food industry as a whole has abused the leeway it has been given by the Food and Drug Administration to self-regulate and failed to adequately test its foods for the likes of led, cadmium, mercury, and arsenic. Testing for baby food heavy metal contaminates occurs at the source of the raw ingredients. Companies do not test the final product. "As of right now, the FDA does NOT regulate the levels of heavy metals or toxins in baby food -- while it does for things like baby formula, candy, and fruit juice. Crazy, right?" according to baby food manufacturer CereBelly.com. The US Congress has written a bill that proposes that baby food now be randomly tested every year by an independent third-party testing facility and that the final product be included in the tests. As I last wrote, baby food manufacturers are sitting up and taking notice to explain how diligent they are in trying to prevent heavy metal contamination. Parents of children with developmental difficulties may wish to file a baby food heavy metal lawsuit.
One baby food manufacturer, CereBelly, has gone the extra mile on being transparent and like all other baby food manufacturers is quick to point out that it is impossible to have a food product that is void of all heavy metals. Some heavy metals like copper and zinc are essential for human health. Others like led, mercury and cadmium can accumulate in the brain and cause developmental difficulties in children. Some health researchers blame unhealthy levels of toxic heavy metals in baby foods as the primary reason more children than ever suffer from childhood autism. CereBelly's chief of supply chain operations explains how serious the company is in selecting farm partners that grow vegetables like carrots and sweet potatoes to make sure they comply with being organic and non GMO. "Cerebelly only partners with trusted farms who are USDA Certified Organic, Non-GMO Project Verified and follow rigorous safety testing. The farms monitor their soil to determine the best possible locations to grow food with the lowest levels of toxic heavy metals. He proceeds to tell readers that the company sets its heavy metal standards on those established by the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA). It also makes no sense to buy your fruits and vegetables locally and try and make your own baby food thinking that it will automatically be safer. "The vegetables you purchased at your local grocery store have not been independently tested for any heavy metals or toxins. And while they might be organic, organic doesn't mean they are exempt from contamination."
