Gerber Baby Cereal May Be The Greatest Violator Of Baby Food Heavy Metal Standards
Further investigation into Gerber Baby Foods and rice cereal is warranted because the company has ignored heavy metal safety standards
Thursday, January 13, 2022 - A groundbreaking article published recently confirmed the greatest fears parents have about child food safety. The article focuses on a Congressional found seven popular baby food manufacturers were guilty of failing to self-regulate and allowing toxic, high concentrations of heavy metals like arsenic, cadmium, lead, and mercury, to contaminate their brands of baby food. All of the toxic heavy metals are a danger to a child's sensitive early brain development and all have been suspected of being one of the causes of childhood autism. Gerber's products, one of the most iconic, trusted, and reputable baby food manufacturers, were found to contain potentially deadly levels of heavy metals listed above. Gerber, a subsidiary of the Nestles brand, like Johnson's Baby Powder which has been found to contain asbestos, a known carcinogen, uses images of a smiling, happy baby on the packaging of their products to subconsciously promote confidence in their product. The US investigation found levels of arsenic 9 times greater in Gerber baby cereal, than the acceptable limit. SFCN tells readers that they should be more concerned about toxic heavy metals contaminating baby foods because, for one, "heavy metals like cadmium, arsenic, lead, and mercury are neurotoxins, meaning that once they reach the bloodstream, they travel to the brain, where they may inflict irreversible damage if present in high concentrations." Secondly, the brain health of a child is of utmost importance and more important than that of an adult, because it is still developing and in need of nourishment. The exact statistics that the Congressional investigation found are staggering and if true would make Gerber rice cereals and their other baby food products number one on the list warranting further investigation. "The safe limit for arsenic in baby food and other consumer products is 10 parts per billion (ppb). However, during the investigation, Gerber was found to have used 67 batches of rice flour that contained over 90 ppb arsenic. Furthermore, the company used ingredients to manufacture baby food with lead levels as high as 48 ppb. Whereas the safe limit for this heavy metal is 5 ppb. Moreover, roughly 75% of the carrots it used contained a 5 ppb excess of cadmium, with some having up to 87 ppb," according to SFCN. Parents are outraged that given the incriminating numbers there has been no FDA recall, and no warning is required to be published on Gerber products. Much of the baby foods that are sold by Gerber and Nestle are subsidized by US taxpayer money through food stamps programs and vouchers. Each US state has a list of the nutritional food products that low-income families may spend their allotment on. Several states have taken Gerber rice cereals off of the recommended list, but most states continue to recommend their products. Parents of children who have developed autism, ADHD, or other neurological difficulties may be entitled to lump-sum compensation by filing a heavy metal baby food lawsuit.
